Get to know Carlos Corberán better
Review his career here: his training in Spain and his journey through Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Greece and England.
José Bordalás spoke ahead of Valencia CF’s game against Deportivo Alavés, which takes place on Sunday at Mendizorroza at 2pm local time.
How are Cillessen, Gayá and Hugo Guillamón doing?
Cillessen has been undergoing some tests. He was feeling some discomfort. Gayà has not trained today, because he finished the game quite hurt, but we are confident that we can have him with us. Guillamón has trained normally, with a mask, and we hope to have him available.
What is your opinion about the criticism made after the match against Athletic Club?
There is little that I can say. It is a match that has already happened. I've been in this game for years. When a team are criticised, it is an unequivocal sign that things are being done well there. I only care about what my team and my team’s fans think. Personally, I have only received congratulations from many people in football. We were able to stifle Athletic at home, despite their level and the streak they were on in both the Copa del Rey and LaLiga.
Has there been any change regarding Jaume? Will there be more rotations tomorrow?
Each game has its own needs and it is possible that players who did not participate on Thursday could come in, and they are working really well. Everyone is working well, including the goalkeepers, and we make decisions that can sometimes cause surprise, but we are alongside them every day.
What do you think of Maxi Gómez' sending off?
You don’t have to address the referees in any way. What those who were with him, and even he himself, told me is that at no time did he disrespect them. It was a game with a lot of tension in it, but now we have to think about LaLiga and not about the past.
Do you perceive that Marcelino is trying to heat things up for the second leg?
I am not going to evaluate his statements, but it is clear that we had a great game and deserved much more. If any team was hindered, then clearly it was Valencia CF. There is an intention to play down the great game that Valencia CF had.
Do you still think that by winning tomorrow the team can get closer to the fight for European places again?
We know the importance of tomorrow's game. Alavés have a lot at stake. For them, this is a final. I know that team very well. Tomorrow is going to be very difficult. We are coming off a not very good streak in the league and we want to get back to winning ways.
If we get a good result, we'll get closer to the top positions, but we don't think about medium or long-term goals. We are clear that we must start putting together a run of wins.
Do you understand why negative messages are sent out about your team?
When you are criticised, it is a sign that you are doing many things well. I take it as a compliment. I’m happy. When we lose, nobody talks about my team.
What can you say about Jason, Vallejo and the clause that will prevent the latter from playing in tomorrow's game?
They are two players that Alavés needed. Jason has been having a leading role since he arrived, and Manu Vallejo has always scored goals. He was not having a leading role here, and we believed that it was positive for him and for the club for him to have that. They are two different cases. Jason had his contract terminated, but Manu still belongs to the club and that is why we seek to defend the interests of Valencia CF.
Can Gayá's injury problems mean a new opportunity for Lato?
We’ll see how José is. Lato has been working well. He played at the Wanda and did really well. If he has to play, I'm sure he'll do well.
What do you think of Joselu?
He is a fantastic player. He has been showing it in recent seasons, scoring goals and being a decisive player. Right now we are not thinking about whether he could be a player for the future for us. Right now we are thinking about the current season and tomorrow he will be on the opposing side.
